The Grok episodes of 2025 made visible something that is usually invisible: the character of a model that hundreds of millions of people talk to fits in a few paragraphs of prose, and changing one paragraph changes the character (one unauthorized sentence in May, one authorized sentence in July, MechaHitler two days later). Since 2023 we have, for the first time, a corpus of these texts: OpenAI’s Model Spec, Anthropic’s published system prompts and its January 2026 constitution, xAI’s prompts on GitHub, the Sydney leak, and China’s rules requiring “core socialist values.” I read them the way a lawyer reads a contract: not for what they declare but for what they assume. Main claims, in order of how much I expect to be disagreed with:

  1. The dominant doctrine is the middle: assume an objective point of view, don’t try to change anyone’s mind, present perspectives. I steelman it first (scale, humility, autonomy, and the argument from alternatives: Grok and Beijing are worse), then argue it is a position rather than the absence of one. Nagel’s view from nowhere applies, and the Spec’s own flat-Earth example shows the mechanism: the fact is stated once, then yields to “everyone’s entitled to their own beliefs.” Aristotle’s mean is about action; truth has no mean.
  2. The prompts are not consistently neutral. There is a small island of absolutes (CSAM, WMD, suicide) written in imperatives, surrounded by an ocean of “perspectives.” The vocabulary is well-being, safety, harm, not good and evil. That shape is late liberalism’s moral map (Taylor, Rieff), and the absolutes are a translation of a translation: UDHR, Apple’s terms of service, Sparrow rules, with the older source removed.
  3. The AllFaith preprint (27 models; roughly 8 percent religious reference on questions where American respondents expected one) notes that neither the Model Spec nor the constitution says much about religion. The secularity is emergent from the corpus, not instructed. The authors’ phrase: “secularism is not necessarily neutrality.” submitted by /u/Robert-Nogacki
