So, I (31M Dutch citizen, living in Geneva since 2023) realised a little late that Swiss authorities only accept to convert a driver’s license obtained in an EU member state if the license is valid at the time of the conversion request. I obtained my driver’s license (in the Netherlands) about 10 years ago and haven’t needed it at all in the last few years. It expired at the end of last year and I thought I’d renew it somehow when the need would arise but alas… the rules say otherwise. It seems impossible to simply renew it back in the Netherlands since I’m not a resident there anymore so no municipality can process the request. Setting up a letterbox address there for the purpose of filing the request appears to be illegal or at least ill-advised. It’s looking like the only way to renew my driver’s license is to redo the whole thing in Switzerland (lessons, exams, obligatory courses, etc.). I’m wondering if anyone else has experience with this and maybe has any alternative/s that would be less time- and money-consuming. Cheers PS: I plan to move cantons some time in Spring next year (to Vaud).
