Seventy years ago, AI became an official field of research. Since 1956, the human mind has changed very little, while the technological environment has changed almost completely. During the course of only 70 years, the world has become so complex that humans need AI to understand it. In 2026, we now have quantum computers with the potential to process certain complex problems that traditional computers cannot solve efficiently. The ouroboros, the snake eating its own tail, captures the deepest struggle of the AI age. The struggle is not humans versus machines, but between two possible purposes for intelligence: intelligence used to expand human life and intelligence used to extract maximum economic value from it. If intelligence is used to expand human life, the ouroboros represents renewal, with intelligence nourishing the life that created it. But if intelligence is used primarily for extraction, the ouroboros becomes a symbol of self consumption. The snake eating its tail can therefore represent either symbiosis or consumption.
