As AI gets more powerful and there is a demand for the development of it, we might have integration of AI with human brains in the form of mental chips. A big question that I have with this is would it be possible to make individual humans metacognizant of the process going on within the AI? What I mean by this is the difference between you doing 5+5=10 on a calculator vs. in your head. Yes, both result in the same answer, but you are not capable of thinking as the calculator during the addition process, whereas you can explain why you got 5+5=10 and your thought process as you solve it. I think that this has some really interesting implications for if it is or isn’t possible. If it is possible for AIs and humans to interface such that the human is able to think like the AI/be aware of the AIs thoughts and not just receive the answers to questions, then I think that would be an amazing future, as rather than AIs replacing humans, we could grow with them. If this is not possible however, I think we could actually end up in a really weird place kind of like the Bicameral Mind that Julian Jaynes talked about, where we just mentally ask and receive answers from the AI wired to our brains, causing us to feel like we have a separate consciousness/other being in our head. I am curious to see what other people think, and if there has actually been any technology or signs that show how humans and AIs might integrate biologically along with if there is any research on whether AIs are capable of metacognition. submitted by /u/Alone-Moose-9703
