GPT Astra has been sparking a lot of discussion that I’ve already seen, but this time, with new takes. There’s obviously a lot of doom, but I’m not well informed enough to the point where I can confidently say what will and will not happen. I want to discuss a few topics and know what you guys have to say that has a factual basis behind it, besides just “that’s how it is.” The big 3 are: AI will completely replace human jobs and create further wealth gap divisions, AI will lead to a catastrophic change in day to day life and QoL, and AI is negatively impacting the environment. Realistically, within the next 5-10 years, are many jobs actually in danger to the point where there will be massive lay-offs? I’m personally already struggling finding research/data roles, but I know that’s more prone to AI replacement. However, some say AI will improve, not replace, but others say that the job market will go down the drain. And so, depending on the outcome, I’m assuming a massive impact on the wealth division will make it more difficult, if not impossible to change your current financial situation. When it comes to QoL and Day to Day living, how will humanity actually live with such a huge change, to where people are suggesting the job market as a whole will be replaced by AI? What will even happen to money? What will happen to human creativity, like movies, games, music, literature. In a utopia, this could obviously have us live in a way where we only focus on the things we want, but we don’t live in one. How will we be able to afford anything? What is going to happen to the way our lives function? If Astra is indication that big change is coming, why aren’t we discussing this further? And finally, the environment. I know there’s a ton of gloom, and data centers are not these abhorrent, environmental catastrophes, yet. But I’m assuming at some point, they will start to negatively affect the environment. Why aren’t data centers being built in rich areas? Why are there not more restrictions when it comes to AI implementation and its effects on the environment? Will there be any regulations that will protect the low class from having data centers be built next to them? There’s obviously more, but these points are the main ones I think about that are not discussed beyond just “yeah bro, the future is changing.” What basis is there for this actual concern?
