OpenAI published new internal data on how its researchers are using coding agents. The research organization now uses 3.1 agent-workdays of effort for every human workday , while researchers are also writing more code and running more experiments than before. OpenAI says the work delegated to agents has also become increasingly complex, and that it has reached its goal of an “automated research intern” capable of handling well-defined research tasks that could take a skilled researcher several days. Humans still set research priorities and judge the results, and OpenAI notes that more than half of successful 4–8 hour tasks required at least one human intervention.
