We talk constantly about how smart AI is, but maybe we’re overlooking another axis: How fast does intelligence experience time? Call it Machine Subjective Time. Not “subjective” as in consciousness -just how much useful reasoning a machine can complete during one second of human time. Imagine a capable AI eventually completing a meaningful reasoning cycle every 5 ms. That’s 200 cycles per second. While you experience one minute, it could go through 12,000 rounds of observing, reasoning, testing, criticizing and revising. And machines can also be copied. Run 100,000 instances simultaneously and suddenly an enormous amount of intellectual work can happen while essentially no time passes from our perspective. This isn’t an entirely new idea. Nick Bostrom called a related concept “speed superintelligence” and wrote about artificial minds having different “subjective rates of time.” But modern AI makes this feel much less philosophical. Inference is getting extremely fast, hardware is massively parallel, and AI agents can increasingly use tools, run experiments and interact with environments. If capability keeps increasing while latency collapses, eventually the important question may stop being: “How intelligent is the AI?” and become: “How much thinking can it do while one second passes for us?” At sufficiently large ratios, humans could watch technological progress occurring on a completely different clock.
