Every decade has some sort of genre that becomes the trend to chase. 90s: mascot platformers which were fueled by the success of Sonic putting the Genesis on the map and being a real competitor to Mario, plenty of developers were looking for their own platformer mascot to replicate Sonic or Mario’s success 2000s: online MMOs with the success of World Of Warcraft as well as the hype of online play coming to be a thing. 2010s: Online Shooters first person or not especially with the growth again of online play as well as live service shooters 2020s: open world with the trend mainly being set with breath of the wild 2030s: ???. My guess is a wild one but I think it will possibly 2D fighting games. This last decade has been HUGE for the genre with the prominence of rollback netcode and cross play. But I only think this is the beginning. Street Fighter 6 in particular has been a resounding success but I think we can have multiple equivalents to Steeet Fighter 6 in the 2030s. submitted by /u/TPR-56
