Anthropic says it identified cases in which researchers covertly used Claude for sensitive biological work involving viruses, venom-related compounds, and toxins. Although some of this research may have legitimate scientific applications, the same knowledge could potentially be used to develop biological weapons. The case raises a difficult question: how should AI companies distinguish legitimate life-science research from dangerous dual-use activity before it crosses the line?
