Just to be clear I’m not writing this for sympathy or advice. For background, I have struggled with severe, treatment resistant bipolar disorder for my entire adult life. I was diagnosed in High School and am in my 30s now. I have tried an embarrassingly long list of medications, had multiple surgical procedures (including ECT, TMS, and ketamine). Although I am “better” than I was at the beginning of it all I still am suffering most of the time. I have heard so many horror stories lately about people of various ages becoming severely impacted mentally by relying on AI for mental health help, even to the point of self harm. I’m sure most of you are aware of the stories. For this reason I have avoided using AI to seek advice in that area. Well, tonight I finally had the thought “how much worse could it get?” I explained in some level of detail what my situation was I was very surprised as to the result I got. It told me things no doctor, loved one, or therapist had ever said. For example, I have never been told to stop pushing so hard to get better (at least temporarily) if the process itself is causing exhaustion and suffering. The advice was actually helpful. I was taken aback by this. I am by no means saying it solved my problems, and am also NOT indicating that everybody should rely on AI instead of medical professionals, but I am saying I believe everything has a time and place and if it helps and isn’t destructive or illegal, then it is a good thing. I was left feeling a little bit of weight lifted from my shoulders, a new appreciation for AI as a tool, and more empathy and understanding for people who turn to it. TLDR I have bipolar and for years nothing has solved the issue. Talking to AI about it for the first time was a surprisingly helpful experience and has given me a new perspective. submitted by /u/FrostedSyntax
