I’m 20 years old, a full time student, and totally financially dependent on my parents. I live in my own place and generally feel like an adult but whenever my friends talk about work I feel kinda weird. For personal reasons (not a proper scholarship) my school tuition is incredibly affordable so they haven’t really pushed me to get a job, my dad has encouraged it for a resume which is quite fair, so I’m making it a goal to find some sort of on campus work/research this year, but that might be unpaid. I’m incredibly grateful for their support, especially that I don’t need to manage a job and school at the same time. I have worked before, for a couple months in high school, but it really wasn’t much. I’ve felt weird this summer because I traveled with my family for the first portion, and just didn’t want to deal with finding a job that’d take me from July to September. I had a ton of free time but I don’t feel like I made much of it and I’m beginning to wonder about the importance of having a job aside from the pay. A lot of guys seem to be proud of working landscaping, reselling things, or construction so it seems connected to masculinity in some way. Curious if anyone has felt similarly to me, has anything to say about the importance of working a job, or can name an age where this lifestyle would signal significant immaturity :) Edit: For privacy I don’t really want to give the exact reason my tuition is so cheap, but it’s not something I earned and is to do with a family member, so it also contributes to me feeling kinda weird about this. submitted by /u/Top_Cartographer7878
