So just as the title says, I found out over the weekend that my best friend of 20 years, has been physically and emotionally abusing his girlfriend. He decided to randomly call me on Friday night, and tell me that his girlfriend was “randomly” accusing him of cheating, and because of this he had threatened to knock all of her teeth out. Im not sure why he thought to tell me this, but I of course reacted immediately in disgust. He proceeded to justify his actions, and tell me its because she “pushes him to that point.” I told him on the phone that it was nearly impossible to not see him differently now, and he turned that into a tangent about how terrible his girlfriend is to him, and how terrible his parents are to him. for context, he’s 35. He seemed to have completely disregarded this, because he was sending me messages all weekend. I finally told him that I had no interest in continuing this friendship, because of what he told me. He then immediately brushed it off like he didnt care, and then blocked me. Well the problem here is, I found out a couple hours later, that he ended up lashing out on her over it…like she was the one who told me instead of him. The concerns I have here is this is not an isolated incident. I once witnessed a time where his gf’s small dog (shes like 15 years old probably gonna die soon) peed on the floor, and he absolutely lost it. He started throwing stuff, making rageful screaming sounds, and repeatedly was screaming “I CANT WAIT FOR YOU TO FUCKING DIE!” to the dog over and over again. I acted adversely to this as well, and he just brushed it off and went on a tangent about how he was a victim of this dog who cant control her bladder destroying his home and terrorizing his life. I am not sure what to do here. I am sincerely worried for this woman’s safety, and I fear that me simply telling my now ex-best friend how i felt about his actions, has put her in danger. I was informed by a mutual friend who I confided in about this, that they have a gun in their house. This the root of my anxiety. I did consider calling the police, but since they are both adults, i cant imagine that would accomplish anything other than sending him into a rage. I am at a loss in what to do, other than not being friends with him anymore. I feel like sitting idly by as I know this is happening is wrong, and might keep her trapped in a situation that is unsafe, but also I feel that if he becomes aware of anything he will take it out on her. So asking my fellow men here, if this was your friend, what would you do? EDIT: I really appreciate the feedback here guys. I took the overwhelming advice of filing a police report. I spared no details, and I made sure to tell the police to let him know I am the one who called, so he doesn’t think it was her and take it out on her. submitted by /u/Massive_Target
