Hi everyone, I’m currently in my 5th semester at PHSG in Switzerland , studying to become a lower/upper secondary school teacher (Oberstufenlehrer) . At the same time, I’m really interested in IT and would like to build some skills in that area, potentially even for a future career. I originally wanted to start a Computer Science degree at a university of applied sciences alongside my teaching degree, but unfortunately double enrollment isn’t possible , so I’m looking for other ways to get into IT while finishing my teaching degree. I’d like to spend the next few years learning IT alongside university and ideally work towards something concrete rather than just watching random YouTube tutorials. I’m currently considering CompTIA Security+ , mainly because cybersecurity interests me and I like the idea of having a specific goal/certification to work towards. What would you recommend? What are some realistic ways to learn IT alongside a full-time degree? Which areas would you focus on first: programming, networking, Linux, cybersecurity, etc.? Are platforms like Coursera, Udemy, edX or freeCodeCamp actually worth using? Is Security+ a good starting point, or would you recommend getting some other fundamentals first? Are there any other certifications that are actually useful for getting into IT? What would be a realistic learning path if I can only dedicate a few hours per week? I’m not necessarily trying to become a professional developer or cybersecurity expert immediately. I’d just like to build a solid foundation over the next 2–3 years so that I have the option of moving into IT later, or ideally combining teaching and technology in some way.
