Recent doom-mongering statements have made for attention-grabbing headlines and captured public attention. However, as this article by Melinda Medina (a 13-year veteran teacher) highlights, the more immediate crisis is cognitive offloading . The real danger of LLMs in schools isn’t plagiarism. The deeper problem its that students are using AI to circumvent the “productive struggle.” When students delegate AI to organizing thoughts and analyzing text, they never build the cognitive capacity for independent reasoning. They fail to realize that the assignment isn’t the product. The process of struggle to accomplish a goal is the whole point of learning. Medina suggests that teachers require students to brainstorm and defend their own ideas on paper before they are allowed to use AI.
