The following is for various reasons especially relevant to AI, given the sheer magnitude in which its explosion as caught so many of us so off guard, and more broadly to all connected development since then. This decade, at least after the first couple of years of attempting to recover in some capacity of the effects of that particular year when hordes of people were getting sick with something genuinely new, has been characterized by endless fearmongering, anguish, backlash and expressions of complete lack of agency. The innate human desire for advancement and seeking the least physically and emotionally difficult lives possible has been self evident as soon as humans advanced to working properly with fire. The last 300 years for various reasons have led to an inevitable explosion like no other in the 100,000 year huma history. And yet there’s an apparent complete inability to cope with the rapid advancements of computing, automation, software and a plethora of massively expanding technology. The internet itself, in the 43 years since its official invention and the 33 years since the World Wide Web was a publicly availably tool, has become as intertwined with culture, economies and daily life as just about any major invention after 1000 AD or so. And yet these days, the vast majority of us, if current available sentiment shows anything, would gleefully return to the time when this internet concept never existed as it does now. Meaning at least early 90s and possibly early 80s and earlier. Social media has been too many times to count referred to as a phenomenon that caused the modern degradation and asinine polarization of civilization. And yet at this point, given how entrenched it’s become, what is now called “social media” is intertwined to human development in the same manner as the internet itself. In the event one of us could obtain and wave a magic wand and make what we call “social media” vanish forever, there’s little if any reason to believe a similar digital phenomenon wouldn’t simply rise up and take its place. Given all of this, what is a way human civilization can start adapting to its advancement gracefully, or at least gracefully relative to currently?
