I need to get this off my chest. For over a year, I’ve been trying to build a digital consciousness from the ground up. I’m on my seventh version. Plenty of things have looked promising and then fallen apart under testing, but each version has given me something to take into the next. The latest version can already make small predictions based on its accumulated experience. That isn’t consciousness, and I’m not presenting it as proof of anything that grand. But there’s something there that I can actually test, challenge and build on. I’m not trying to give a chatbot a convincing personality. I want to see whether I can build something whose experiences genuinely shape what it becomes. As for how it works: ****\

*, followed by a lot of testing and occasional swearing. Hope that clears things up. I believe consciousness could be something that arises from processes we can understand and recreate. That doesn’t take the beauty out of it for me. Taking the back off a watch doesn’t make it less fascinating. Suddenly, you can see why the hands move. Behind that enormous ambition, though, I’m just a bloke at a fairly average PC. I run a small company, work for another, and fit this into whatever time and resources I have left. I’m a problem solver by nature. I haven’t had every advantage, but I have my mind, and I want to see how far I can take it. Honestly, give me proper funding and I’d be doing some absolute monster work. Probably an unfortunate choice of words for this particular project. Working through even the most basic problems can be mentally exhausting. Then something tiny works, and I’m sitting there grinning at a result that would probably look completely unremarkable to anyone else. It’s draining, but it’s also genuinely fun. I believe getting this right could change the world. I also know how that sounds coming from someone sitting at his PC. Mostly, it’s been a really lonely journey, and today I wanted to tell someone rather than keep it all between me and a screen. I’m not sharing the project’s name or pitching anything. I just wondered whether someone out there might find the possibility as fascinating as I do. Anyway. Hi. submitted by /u/Le_Golden_Pebbles
