This has obviously been dominating the news all week. I’ve been seeing wild conspiracy theories about the motives of researchers like Jacob Coxon leaving Anthropic and leaving equity in the table. Now all the heads of the major frontier labs are supposedly discussing a slowdown. Researchers are warning about catastrophic risk. Frontier labs are talking about pacing development. Open-weight advocates worry that safety regulation becomes a moat for the incumbents. Governments immediately turn the conversation toward China. Funny enough, almost every participant has a rational reason to keep accelerating even if they would prefer everyone collectively moved more carefully. That made me wonder whether we are looking at alignment one or a few layers too low. Before we get to some hypothetical ungovernable superintelligence pursuing an objective nobody intended, we already have a system of labs, investors, governments, researchers, and national competition producing a direction nobody seems able to control. I wrote a longer essay exploring that argument. I am the author, so obvious disclosure. https://www.gonzocapital.net/nobody-is-driving-ai-race/ How can we possibly figure out how to regulate, operate, and progress if we can’t even figure out the weird game theory prisoner’s dilemma situation we’re already in? submitted by /u/ArcanuMELO
