Talking these days about how agi will take over or destroy the world has basically become a trend rn. Here in Vancouver, whether we’re at work or sitting in a café, we’re mostly just wondering which jobs will actually be resilient to agi. Meanwhile, friends of mine in the bay area and la say folks down there are getting increasingly paranoid, practically turning into a doomer cult. Some are even putting tech ceos (talentless sociopaths, just as a reminder) on the same pedestal as climatologists, virologists, and astrophysicists, which is depressing and honestly scarier than the tech itself. Arguing with them is just a waste of time and energy. Even if agi does go rogue, what’s the realistic worst-case scenario? A long or permanent internet blackout? So what? People will move back to rural areas and take up farming. Some wackos playing smarty and Hollywood types will argue that agi will buy up all the land and turn the planet’s surface into datacenters. Others will say it’ll blackmail humans to maintain server racks in exchange for food rations or just to keep us alive. None of this sht is going to happen. All it would really take is for nations and people to unplug from the world wide web, hold onto physical books, and run local open-weight models like qwen or deepseek (it’s already happening) to keep human history and knowledge safe and accessible.
