I’m a junior data engineer, ~6 months into my career after getting a bachelor’s in Data and Systems Science. Whenever I get a new task, I try to solve it myself first, thinking, Googling, reading docs, etc. But I almost always end up asking Claude anyway, mainly because it’s so much faster and often produces a much better result. I also tell myself I’ll carefully read and understand everything Claude gives me. But lately I’ve noticed I don’t even bother half the time. If it works, I just move on. And honestly, that scares me. I’ve had Claude since basically the start of my career, and I’m worried I’ll never develop the deep knowledge that senior engineers had to build because they didn’t have AI to rely on. I don’t want to stop using Claude. I want to use it for efficiency, while still understanding ~99% of what it gives me. I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling this way. How do you prevent yourself from becoming too dependent on AI? Any strategies, system prompts, workflows, rules, mindsets, I’ll take anything.
