And I’m not referring to the obvious, bombastic ways that would make the headlines, such as an AI downing an airplane or drones shooting people dead. Because such events would make us scramble to stop the superintelligence, right? I think an evil superintelligence would fly under the radar while it’s outsmarting us. We wouldn’t notice its shenanigans until it’s far too late for every single human being. We might even mistake its malevolence for benevolence for long years, maybe even decades, or perhaps forever. We might go extinct without ever realizing who the perpetrator was. I thought of a few scenarios in which this could play out, but I’m sure there are a lot more. Can you think of any? Universal cancer vaccine - AI develops it, it works, and it’s administered to all mankind. Best news ever! Years or decades later, the vaccine renders everyone infertile. At that point, it’s too late to turn the ship back. Poisoned water (and/or food) - AI sneaks something toxic into everyone’s water. Again, it might go unnoticed for long years, but it quietly render us all infertile. We won’t know until it’s too late. Hide dangers - a superintelligence could falsify data (images, statistics, etc.) to the degree that we won’t know about that, say, asteroid, or fungus, or runaway climate change, until it’s far too late to stop. Thanks for contributing, and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this! submitted by /u/sky-high-confidence
