I’m an Asian mom living in Switzerland with my son, and lately I’ve been struggling with something involving other parents and kids in our area. Like most children, my son sometimes has small arguments or disagreements with other kids. I understand that this is normal and that my son can also make mistakes. I’m not saying he is always right. But I’ve noticed that when another child says something mean or does something to my son, it often seems to be treated as just “kids being kids.” But when my son says or does something back, some parents get involved very quickly. There have even been times when parents have come directly to our house to complain about him. It’s starting to make me wonder if we are being treated differently because we are Asian/foreigners. I don’t want to immediately call it racism because I can’t know what someone’s intentions are, and not every parent here is like this. We have also met some genuinely kind and understanding parents. But the repeated situations are making me uncomfortable. Sometimes I even feel like I don’t want my son to go outside and play because I’m worried that another small disagreement will turn into an issue with the parents. I want my son to learn to take responsibility when he does something wrong, but I also want him to be treated fairly. If two children have an argument, I feel like both sides should be listened to instead of automatically making one child the problem. For other immigrant or Asian parents living in Switzerland: have you experienced something similar? How do you normally handle situations like this with other parents? And at what point would you involve the school or speak to the teacher? submitted by /u/Sufficient_Call8005
