The more we rely on AI, the more we may hand over our own thinking to it. But no matter how far AI advances, that does not mean the abilities of the human using it become unnecessary. For example, no matter how advanced an AI-powered surgical robot such as the da Vinci system becomes, the surgeon operating it still needs medical knowledge, as well as the stamina and concentration to carry out a long operation, and the ability to make judgments in the moment. The more advanced the tool becomes, the more the user’s true capability is tested. Perhaps, precisely because we are entering the age of AI, we will increasingly need the power of the “unplugged self” — the part of us that is not connected to AI.
