Where I live marital assets in divorce start on a 50/50 basis no matter where or who they came from. This to me basically makes marriage a non starter unless she could match me in finances because I didn’t work so hard and save so much just to gamble it on a marriage that may not work out or courts that may award me much less of my own money I’d worked so hard for. I don’t have much compared to others but it’s a lot to me considering what it took for me to get where I am now. Part of me wishes I’d met someone when I had nothing because then I’d had nothing to lose and I’d feel any 50/50 or similar split to be fair but now I have something really important to me to lose and that really puts me off anything like marriage and I’d some how have to explain that it’s not that I don’t want to get married but that I don’t want to gamble on get screwed over for my hard earned savings and assets I earned long before marriage. Prenups aren’t a thing here and legally aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. submitted by /u/Helinobter
