When AI disagrees with people, they may change their opinion of the AI—not their original view New University of Michigan research examined what happens when people receive AI feedback about interpersonal dilemmas. When a chatbot agreed with participants’ reasoning, their confidence in their original choice increased. But when the AI challenged them, confidence in their position did not significantly decrease. Instead, participants tended to see the disagreeing AI as more machine-like and less capable of understanding human emotions. They were also less interested in using AI for similar conversations in the future. The findings raise an interesting challenge for AI design: Making chatbots less agreeable may help reduce excessive validation, but disagreement alone may not persuade users to reconsider their reasoning.
