The Linux/Gimp/Blender kind of software engineering model for the new world changing technology? Such that the public gets to have a say in the future instead of just the chinese or western elitocracy? Can we build a community and start working on it? Honestly, I believe it’s more an organisational challenge more than just technical. All cutting edge softwares like aforementioned, GIMP and Blender etc, already demonstrably prove that the public is capable of challenging the big corporations when it comes to the tech. Hardware is an issue for AI that’s not so much with these other technologies, but to be honest I believe that it can be dealt with as well, if sufficient worked is put in it. If we can build on top of the Petals technology ( https://github.com/bigscience-workshop/petals ) that was started as a project by Bigscience, we can really beat the GPU centralized control problem. It’s an incomplete technology, but the basic idea is to have something like Bittorrents but for gpu computation. And the history of software engineering I believe demonstrates that such problems are always solvable or circumventable. AI development is never going to be stopped. In the guise of “AI safety” all that is going to happen is that 2 US companies get to decide how much AI is right and wrong for you to use, with you having essentially 0 say unless you are willing to use significantly weaker fine tuned open weight models trained by some chinese company (which I don’t think is much better either) I am unfortunately not a technical prodigy, not even close. But I’m sure many people on reddit would be. And among them many would agree upon the necessity of community AI (the prominence and popularity of open source software proves that).
