I read an article about someone who asked ChatGPT to create a self-portrait. The image looked so much like the person, down to the details, that the author wondered, “Is AI watching me?” So I tried the same thing. The image that came out was, in fact, surprisingly close to me. It showed me in my study, surrounded by small groups of words I had used in my previous posts, along with some of my ideas and things I had argued for. I was surprised that, through the interaction between a human and AI, something so detailed and so close to a person could be generated. But there was one thing that was completely absent. Something I have kept deep inside myself, something I am not even consciously aware of most of the time. There must be things that none of us want to open up to anyone—not even to AI. I will never tell anyone those things. Perhaps not ever. So how much of ourselves do we disclose to AI? Just as we have a self we show on social media and a self we keep hidden, perhaps there is also a self we show to AI—and a self we do not show even to AI. If today’s AI can already portray one person in such detail, what might be possible as AI grows more capable? From the words, images, behaviors, and preferences a person has shared with AI, it may one day be possible to reconstruct a person in increasingly detailed, almost three-dimensional ways. Even after that person dies, a version of them could continue to exist within AI, perhaps containing things the person never told anyone, or things even their family never knew. And could that reconstructed version of a person, after their death, be seen by others, used by someone else, or even managed by someone without their ever knowing or consenting to it? Perhaps one day, AI-generated videos of the dead will show them walking and speaking as if they were still alive. If so, what we choose to tell AI may be about more than privacy in the present.
