The claim from the title of this post might be true. It also might not be true. There is no real way to keep it from scaling. All you gotta do is really believe it’s true. Kind of like flying. It’s possible. If you’re not able to fly, you just don’t believe in it enough. Or to put it fancy schmancily: that is the cognitive architecture of unfalsifiability. Say your very own text gets flagged. You produced it on parchment with a quill you purchased from that shady duck that keeps visiting your neighbor’s backyard. It doesn’t match the color pattern of the seller. You’re not surprised. Anyway, your writing comes up positive. You say you wrote it yourself. But you could be lying. You provide drafts. But those could be fabricated. Every counterexample can be dismissed while the underlying suspicion remains intact. Despite having invented science fiction as a genre, Mary Shelley very probably wasn’t a time traveler. However probable this is, it is not certain. But certainty isn’t a binary on off switch. It’s inherently asymptotic. So whenever AI detection is presented as an accusation that nothing can overturn, I will answer with my own accusation: AI detectors manufacture doubt to sell humanizers.
