I know this reads existential, but I don’t mean it to. I am actually curious what tangible steps people have taken to feel more purpose or meaning in their lives. Background: I’m in my thirties, attended graduate school, and now work as a senior scientist. I’m married with a beautiful daughter and a roof to raise her under. I have so much I’m grateful for. Despite all that, I often look back at incredible experiences I had during past jobs, or past aspirations to be an astronaut or other unrealistic goals like that. I worked incredibly hard to get where I am, but I don’t feel any purpose to my work, and I’m always comparing myself to others who make more and am left feeling like a failure. Try as I might, I haven’t had any real friendships in years, just work colleagues that I’m friendly with. I don’t think anyone will remember me besides my family, and I don’t think I’ll actually make any difference in the world - and some small, but loud part of me is bothered by that. I go to some pretty dark places mentally when I realize that and it certainly isn’t healthy for a sense of self worth. So, asking others around my age (thirties) and older: when did you find purpose in life, and how did you find it? Thanks all. submitted by /u/magicthrowaway2021
