There are some aspects of the Swiss health insurance system I can see that make sense (a nuanced debate to have) and whilst I’m not ignorant and knew it also has some shitty aspects, I never really experienced them until the events that unfolded over the past year. About a year ago I had an accident that is covered under the accident insurance law on the proviso that it’s not attributable to wear and tear. I trusted the system thinking I’ll get the best care and the insurance system will cover it. After calling an ambulance (first mistake I know), I did get the best care with physio, hospital bed, treatment etc etc. I got the bill for the ambulance that I paid thinking the accident insurance will cover it. I lodged the accident claim with my employer/Suva and thought all was well. Then I started getting called in for investigations and scans etc and again I thought this was normal for them to check the healing process. Then suddenly a year later I get the determination that my accident isn’t deemed an accident due to wear and tear and now I must bear the costs alone. Yes my health insurance takes over, but I have the 2500 franchise as I’m a low wage worker and luckily I’m young enough to just ride out the occasional sickness every year. Having to pay thousands of francs within 30 days sucks enough but that’s not my biggest gripe. I’m absolutely frothing at the mouth that included in these costs are the investigations that Suva demanded that weren’t in fact checking my healing progress but rather searching for a reason to reject my claim. I paid for the evidence used against me. And these costs now total the initial hospitalisation and treatment costs. I find this absolutely absurd and parasitic. Had I know this, I would have just paid the hospital and treatment costs alone. I know people will say I should’ve known, or I should have done this etc etc. but of course we all know which horse to pick in last Saturday’s race. An Einsprache is in process yes, but it’s of course a David and Goliath case. I’m not looking for health or legal advice though I am open to it. But I just wanted to rant and hear that it’s going to be ok and I’ll survive. I’m just so mad, upset and worried right now. What I have learnt is, unless you’re dying, take an uber to the hospital and question or object to processes knowing the costs could be borne by you. I’m just really dumbfounded we have a system that can do this and I know I used the USA as an example and we’re far better than them, but that bar is so low you can step over it.
