Before the Industrial Revolution, physical strength and the ability to perform physical work were major sources of value. After the Industrial Revolution, machines took over a large part of physical labour, and over time, human value shifted more toward mental and intellectual labour. Now, I think the AI revolution could be similar to the Industrial Revolution, but this time AI is increasingly replacing intellectual labour rather than physical labour. This is something I’ve been thinking about for the past few days: Physical labour was replaced by machines, and humans shifted toward intellectual labour. If AI eventually replaces a large amount of intellectual labour, what becomes the next scarce form of labour? What becomes valuable when intelligence itself becomes abundant?
