AI expectations are extremely high right now, and a lot of software engineers are worried about losing their jobs. But I remember, When cloud computing took off, we heard the same thing. Moving from in house servers to the cloud was supposed to eliminate IT jobs. Almost 15 years later, we’re still here. The cloud actually created entirely new opportunities. I think AI is similar. I’d describe it as “automation on steroids.” The interesting difference is that AI can speak our language so well that people assume it understands our work. But an LLM is still operating within the information and patterns available to it. It’s like a fish in a pond. It can explore the pond, but it can’t step outside and see the pond itself. Which brings me to Plato’s cave. Maybe AI can become incredibly good at recognizing the shadows, but seeing the real thing requires stepping outside the cave. submitted by /u/forevergeeks
