What if we have on the one hand cheap solar power, good batteries, electric vehicles, local and free AI, general purpose humanoid robots, efficient autonomous transport, etc. But on the other hand much of the planet is uninhabitable much of the year due to global warming. So we live in highly insulated houses or bubbles, while outside is frequently burning down or at least too hot to spend much time in. We mostly stay in our cars when travelling because it’s comfortable and they drive themselves, and the climate outside is inhospitable. Many shopping centres, walkways, even parks are underground. People do go outside, but it’s not as nearly as common or nearly as nice, and it’s getting worse. It’s going to be decades before it stops getting worse, even if we decide to finally do something about it. The technology and luxury is great, but the background is often fire or wasteland. We thought we’d driven a lot of species to extinction before, but we were only getting started. If current trends continue (solar panel prices, battery density, AI model quality, self driving vehicles, robotics, global warming) then that’s what we’ll get. Solarpunk utopia inside our network of bubbles, dystopia when you consider the broader state of the environment. Is there any reason to suspect any of these trends will change any time soon? How do you feel about such a future? submitted by /u/StrategicHarmony
