I was working on a research project and decided to use Claude to discuss my topic, but couldn’t since its minimum age is 18 and above, and I am below 18. So, I decided to use Google Gemini. It was going well. Did lots of research, and Gemini aided me throughout. I completed my initial research phase and left it for a brief period to work on some other commitments, and came back to write my initial research paper so I could send it out to a few professors. I asked it to summarize all the research we have done together so far, but it said it doesn’t recall any research that was done in the chat and said it doesn’t have context from other chats. I clearly kept saying it was all present in the current chat I was in, but Gemini kept denying it. On another chat, I wanted to talk about the new iPhone release and asked it to pull up all the new features announced by Apple. It replied to me saying that there was no announcement regarding the new iPhone. We kept going back and forth, but it still kept arguing with me. I asked other LLMs, and they all concurred with me regarding the release of the new iPhone. I showed that to Gemini and also articles by Apple regarding the release and announced features, but it still disagreed with me, telling me that those articles were fake. I kept arguing more, and it kept shooting me down with safety guardrails, saying the conversation was becoming unsafe. At no point was the conversation unsafe. After a few more prompts, Gemini closed the chat on its own. My initial thought was that it was hallucinating because of the large context length of the research chat, but it hallucinated IMMEDIATELY in the other chat where I asked about the new Apple product releases. All in all, Google Gemini has become a VERY big inconvenience to use with its ridiculous safety guardrails, inability to remember context, hallucinations, and outdated information.
