I know this might trigger some people, but after living in Switzerland for quite a while, I have to say it: the Swiss rail system is a bit overrated. I also used to believe the hype. For years, I wasn’t a regular commuter. I’d take the train occasionally, everything seemed smooth enough, and I proudly repeated the classic “Swiss trains are always on time” line to friends abroad. Last year I became a daily commuter on the Lausanne, Renens, Geneva route, and my perspective changed. On paper, my commute should take a little over an hour. In reality, it regularly stretches close to two hours because of delays and cancellations. When you depend on multiple connections, delays become a serious problem. Trains arrive late, others get cancelled, and the entire journey becomes unpredictable. This is one of the busiest corridors in the country, yet reliability often feels fragile. The recent vandalism incident made things worse. It took almost four days before everything was fully back to normal. For a country that prides itself on efficiency, that resolution time felt hard to justify. So many people rely on this line every single day. Even today, I am writing this from a cancelled connection where we had to change trains again because of disruption. I am not saying the system is terrible. Compared to many countries, it is still good. But the gap between the legendary reputation and the everyday commuter reality on the Lausanne to Geneva route is real. As someone who genuinely believed in that reputation, I have to admit I am disappointed. Curious to hear if others on this route feel the same, or if I’ve just been particularly unlucky. submitted by /u/mfsahin
