I saw a clip from Pretty Woman earlier today, it was the scene where Julia Roberts gets thrown out of the boutique and then comes back to “show off” her flash new outfit. It made me wonder, what do male romantic fantasies look like ? And how do they get represented in movies ? I was surprised that I couldn’t really think of a clear cut answer. I searched around and found the themes of “She sees the real him”, “Broken man redeemed by love”, “Competence makes him irresistible”, “Ordinary guy chosen by extraordinary woman”, but the movie examples were kinda meh: Rocky, James Bond, Top Gun - where the relationship is not the focus of the movie, and then 50 First Dates, Silver Lining Playbook, Good Will Hunting - where the relationships are not really extraordinary enough to warrant the fantasy status ? Though there definitely is a case for 50 First Dates, I just probably wouldn’t put it in the “Ordinary guy chosen by extraordinary woman” category. Anyway, once I accepted that I am not going to find satisfying results, I thought of the movie that I settled on as my answer: Carlito’s Way, because he objectively did not deserve her, yet there she was. I will be re-watching it later tonight after like 15 years to see if it holds. I really enjoyed this thought experiment and I am curious to see what other movies people would think off. submitted by /u/AbaloneNeither918
