I run r/IndiaCapitalMarkets , a small sub on India’s capital markets for people outside India, so this is partly a plug. The AI angle is real though: in my reading the AI trade is one of the bigger forces on Indian equities this year.
- The index gap. To 30 September 2026, MSCI Emerging Markets is up 23.7 percent for the year in dollars. MSCI India is down 14.7 percent. Three chip names (TSMC, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix) are 29 percent of the emerging markets index. India’s whole information technology sector is 6.75 percent of MSCI India, and the one technology company in its top ten sells IT services, not chips. My view: India is the large market with no AI hardware trade, and 2026 priced that. The counter-view: India is still the pricier market after the fall, at 22 times trailing earnings against 14.9, so AI is not the whole story.
- Public compute. The government’s IndiaAI Mission has an outlay of Rs 10,372 crore (roughly USD 1.1 billion at about 95 rupees to the dollar). More than 38,000 GPUs are on a shared portal for startups and universities, and 20,000 more were announced in February.
- Usage. In Anthropic’s Economic Index (May 2026 data), India’s Claude usage is 0.3 times what its share of the world’s working-age population would predict, rank 102 of 121 countries. What is there skews to software development (16.2 percent of conversations against 11.5 globally) and education (19.3 against 13.2).
- Rules. On 19 August the chairman of SEBI, the securities regulator, said guidelines on AI and machine learning in the markets would come “shortly”, with kill switch and human-in-the-loop controls. I had not seen a circular as of 5 October. I will follow these in r/IndiaCapitalMarkets with primary sources: what the index gap means for a foreign holder, and the SEBI rules when they land. No stock tips, no products. Which of these four do you think the market has wrong?
