After extensive interaction with large language models, I keep returning to a core question: In what sense, if any, do LLMs “understand”? At inference time, an LLM maps a token sequence to a probability distribution over the next token: P(tokenₙ | token₁…tokenₙ₋₁) Its outputs emerge from learned statistical structure across massive human-generated corpora. There is no explicit grounding, no direct experiential reference, and no intrinsic intentionality. What appears as reasoning is the compression and recombination of correlations encoded during training. The model does not have lived experience of fear, responsibility, loss, or consequence. It models how humans talk about those concepts. Technically, this makes LLMs extremely powerful as:

  • probabilistic inference engines
  • linguistic compressors
  • pattern completion systems
  • cognitive amplifiers However, as LLMs become embedded in systems that influence:
  • hiring and layoffs
  • policy drafting
  • automation pipelines
  • institutional workflows the philosophical dimension becomes harder to ignore. LLMs:
  • do not bear consequences
  • do not incur risk
  • do not experience harm
  • do not have stakes in outcomes Even if they simulate ethical reasoning, they do not care — because there is no internal cost function tied to human welfare, only to predictive likelihood. So the question becomes: How should we frame deployment of systems that optimize probability, but not truth, responsibility, or moral accountability? Are hybrid architectures, grounding approaches, or governance layers sufficient? Or are we mischaracterizing what these systems fundamentally are? I’m not arguing against LLM deployment.
