Today, Anthropic announced that, due to overwhelming demand, it is reconsidering previously approved applications to its Claude Startups program, with some founders losing access to offers they had already been approved for. This is deeply disappointing because there is a fundamental difference between stopping new offers and retroactively withdrawing commitments already made. There we are where a bunch of startups applied and received approvals, but were then told hours or days later it was being retracted. To reverse those decisions because demand exceeded expectations is not a startup problem. It is a failure of planning and execution on Anthropic’s part. Anthropic, have you considered that some may have already started planning their development, budgets, and infrastructure around those commitments? You can change program terms for future applicants. You can pause new applications. You can introduce stricter eligibility criteria. But once you approve an offer, you should stand behind it. For a company that wants startups to build their products and businesses on its infrastructure, this sends entirely the wrong message. If an approval from Anthropic can be reversed after the fact, how much confidence should founders place in its other commitments? The issue isn’t the $1,000 in credits or the free subscriptions, it’s really about the principle here. How is Trust built ya? Trust is built by honoring commitments, especially when doing so becomes inconvenient, because thats where trust has a cost, and honoring it actually becomes meaningful (comes at a cost). Anthropic should honor all previously approved offers and apply any revised criteria prospectively. The startup ecosystem really deserves better than this nonsense. This is indeed a very bad precedent to set for everything to come. submitted by /u/Current_Balance6692
