I can’t believe how so many people can invoke a nebulous utopia without bothering to even imagine what it looks like. Let’s suppose this all goes to nonexistent “plan”, and doesn’t become an excuse for the couple people who own datacenters to just get rid of the rest of us. Let’s say AI can perfectly replicate all human activity, on demand, both economic and interpersonal, can substitute a friend, substitute an artist, substitute a scientist, while having zero will of its own. Let’s say every element of human experience becomes a perfect commodity. Then what is a human being worth? Do you want to be a perfectly passive, useless vacuum, worthless to everything and everyone? Every single one of your dreams, hobbies, creative outlets, every single one of your aspirations, both big and small, every little human interaction, every kernel of meaning, every single purpose you could have in life to disappear? Do you want your kids to no longer need you? submitted by /u/understated_quokka
