A lot of useful research never reaches people who cannot read the dominant academic languages comfortably. AI translation could make papers, conference talks, and technical discussions more accessible. It might also help researchers from different regions collaborate without waiting for a perfect human translation. The risk is that small errors in technical language can change the meaning of a result. I would rather have a rough translation with uncertainty clearly marked than a smooth translation that hides its weak points.
