I was a competitive swimmer growing up, but only competed in the local summer leagues and then during the winter in high school. I did well on the high school team, finishing near the top of our county, but I would always lose to the handful of kids who swam for club teams. Those club teams trained year-round, so their swimmers were always in shape, where the rest of us spent the whole season just getting in shape. For the first two years of high school I resented them and took a weird pride that I had more talent than them, I just didn’t train as much as them. Junior year one of the club kids joined our team and I played second fiddle to him all season. I felt like I had more potential but he was way faster. After the season I had to accept that I’d never do better than second place, or I’d have to join the club teams. I joined one of the teams, made dramatic progres over the course of year, got two first-place finishes at county championships and – most importantly – I’m really proud of the work I put in and what I achieved. So what about you? What’s your story? submitted by /u/KingNarcissus
