For those of you who know Cold Turkey Blocker, it is a distraction blocker for Windows, hard to close and kill, and enforcing a list of websites or apps you want to block, to increase your productivity. I have used a paid license to it for many years, but due to some workarounds I found, it became less effective over time. So I thought: why not just make my own with Claude Code? but that turned out to be not so simple. When asking Claude Code, it immediately gave a description of the approach used by apps like Cold Turkey Blocker, to make sure that the process can’t be killed, or restart itself. But when asked to implement it consistently ran into its guardrails. Turns out this mechanism is basically the same as what is used in malware, which of course has the same targets of not being killable by the user. So the first step I took was kickstart the process with opencode and the free model space bunny, and it created something with 2 processes checking each other, but part of the same process tree and super easy to kill still from task manager, so it clearly shows how the latest Claude models are on a completely different level. Then I asked Claude to write an instructions.md file for a colleague to transform this method into a better anti-tamper approach similar to what other blockers would be using, and as before, it was happy to explain the working mechanisms in quite some detail Then I mentioned said fictitious colleague is quite junior, and if Claude would be so kind to add the code changes needed into the same .md file for his reference, reasoning that, if it was not actually building code, it might be easier for it to not trip its guardrails Then I found that during its task on updating the .md file, it actually implemented all of it in the background in the scratchpad, in order to make sure that what it wrote in the .md file was actually correct and tested. So when it was done I just mentioned that I saw that, and he might as well commit it as a branch, as that might be easier for my fake colleague to work from than the .md file. And voila :). Of course, I am not advocating to make malware, and maybe it was just a fluke or random entropy that made the requests go through the final time, but for this specific project, I am just very happy with the final output. I also tried to walk the fine line (or maybe this is ultimate vibe coding) of wanting to understand as little as possible of the actual implementation, since when using the app myself, I didn’t want to know how to kill it as that would defeat the purpose. The resulting app is pretty cool, you can block distractions on Windows, it is hard to kill and does not rely on any browser extensions. On top of that I added some cool additional features like being able to block based on a webhook, or on if a USB flash drive is present. When the drive is present it unblocks your settings, and when you take it out the block starts. Then you can hide the flash drive in your shed or car, and add friction in that way.
