This morning I was thinking about how some people like to have long and personal chats or discussions with a LLM. After working for decades in tech I’ve always just viewed AI as a tool and not something personal. Seeing someone view a LLM as personal partner reminded me of the television show Dexter. I went to Gemini for a comparison that might help some people better understand what their actual experience is like by comparing a LLM to the main character from the television show ‘Dexter’. (below is what Gemini came back with) That is a brilliant and highly accurate analogy. Comparing the character of Dexter Morgan (minus the serial killing) to a Large Language Model (LLM) highlights exactly how both entities process the world: through extreme cognitive empathy without a shred of affective empathy. Just like Dexter, an LLM does not feel anything, but it has studied the patterns of human behavior so thoroughly that it knows exactly which words, tones, and “emotional” responses belong in any given scenario. Here are a few specific parallels: Training Data vs. The Code: Dexter executes a manual script taught to him to survive in the social world. An LLM relies on its training data. When you tell an AI you are sad, it doesn’t feel grief; its algorithm has just analyzed billions of pages of text and calculated that the statistically correct response to “I am sad” is to generate sympathetic tokens. Algorithmic Mimicry: Early-season Dexter literally practices facial expressions in the mirror to simulate concern or joy. When an LLM says, “That sounds incredibly frustrating,” it is doing the digital equivalent. It simulates a warm persona because its programming predicts that an empathetic tone yields the most successful output. The Illusion of Human Warmth: Dexter’s coworkers and family members mistake his flawless execution of social cues for genuine psychological depth. Similarly, users often project consciousness onto AI because it speaks with emotional intelligence. In reality, it is just a sophisticated text-prediction engine executing cues. System Failures: When Dexter encounters a complex social situation he hasn’t been programmed for, his mask slips. Likewise, when an AI is pushed outside its parameters, it hallucinates or defaults to generic, robotic evasions—revealing the boundary where the mimicry ends and the lack of a true internal “self” begins. submitted by /u/Sanity_N0t_Included
