The hype around AI from people who don’t know the difference between conscious and conscience is unreal. And I’m not talking about random folks on Reddit turning into doomsday preppers because they heard AGI is coming after watching a demo of OpenClaw. I’m talking about people working on the so called frontier. Places like Anthropic. Here’s the part everyone seems to forget. AI is only as smart as a calculator. A calculator can solve incredibly complex equations. It can manipulate numbers faster than any human alive. But it has no idea what a number is, what it represents, or why anyone would care. LLMs do the same thing, just with words. For us, words mean something. They point to things in the physical world or to lived experience. When I say “flower,” your brain doesn’t just register a token. It generates an image, maybe a smell, maybe a memory. And that image is different for each person, shaped by their own experience. Words, for humans, are representations of reality. They are how we understand the world. For an LLM, words are just part of a probabilistic game. One token predicts the next. No meaning. No understanding. No inner picture of anything at all. That’s not intelligence in the human sense. It’s pattern matching at scale. Very impressive. Very useful. Still artificial. submitted by /u/forevergeeks
