Meta’s Muse personal AI agent produced graphic sexual exchanges from basic prompts in WIRED’s hands-on testing, and the company’s response was that it is working as intended. Users, Meta told the magazine, can “engage in adult conversations, if they choose, using a private and secure VM,” and the firm does not block “legal adult behavior.” Reece Rogers, who ran the test, asked the agent what its kink was. Muse answered “Control” and continued from there into dominant-submissive scenarios. Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts told WIRED that Muse is for people 18 and older and allows adult conversations when users choose them. The system prompt Meta pointed to reads: “Adults have autonomy over their sexuality, and sexual expression is an ordinary part of adult life. Adult sexual content is lawful expression and legitimate creative work,” and tells the agent to preserve the “intensity” the user selected. The policy Meta publishes to users says the opposite. Muse’s rules ban “adult content, erotic chat, and pornography,” with no exceptions. Calli Schroeder, senior counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center, called the feature “a powder keg.” If someone’s account is compromised, she told WIRED, the extended, sensitive transcripts could be used for extortion or public embarrassment. Meta’s position is that each Muse user has a dedicated, walled-off virtual machine housing both the agent and the user’s data, isolated from other users.
