I’m curious about how men view the different responsibilities they have toward their mother and their wife, particularly after getting married. Recently, I was with my sister and brother-in-law, and we were asking each other silly hypothetical questions. I asked my brother-in-law, “If you had to save your mum or my sister, who would you choose?” He immediately said his mum, which led to an awkward silence. I honestly expected him to joke that he’d save his wife, and I hadn’t anticipated the question being taken so seriously. My sister seemed genuinely hurt by his response, and I could understand why it might have upset her. I understand the importance of a mother and the sacrifices that go into raising a child. At the same time, marriage involves making a lifelong commitment to another person, and I’m interested in how men reconcile these two relationships when their priorities appear to conflict. For the married men here, how has marriage changed the way you think about your responsibilities toward your mother versus your wife? What does prioritizing your wife actually mean to you, and how do you balance that with the respect and loyalty you feel toward your mother? I’d particularly appreciate hearing different perspectives on what changes, if anything, when a man starts his own family. submitted by /u/Low_Account2524
