We’ve seen for months now that Runelite maintainers are getting overwhelmed with the influx of plugins being developed due to AI. This is only going to get worse, not better, as time goes on. This has been brought up several times in the past but now it is more relevant than ever - The game needs an official plugin API that is well-defined and strict. This is the model WoW uses for its plugin system (called “add-ons” there), and it is why plugins for that game do not require manually reviewing every single one that gets created. You’re free to download any random WoW add-on from Github and use it, because it by definition cannot do anything nefarious. Runelite requires manual human review of plugins right now because the API to make plugins for it is way too permissive and wide open. This is bad for two reasons. 1) It’s too much pressure on a select few individuals kindly providing their free time to do these reviews, and 2) It arbitrarily limits the creativity and openness of the client and its plugin ecosystem. A well-designed plugin API would allow plugin authors to write whatever plugins they want within its limitations, and because those limitations are placed within the system itself, plugins would no longer require review. People would be free to publish their plugins however they wish and users can install anything they want, whether it’s through the official plugin hub or not. Again, this is how WoW has always worked for its system and it’s a proven method when done correctly. Of course, the challenge here is that it’s a large undertaking for Jagex to take on. But for the long term health of the game, I think it is necessary. Jagex should not need to keep relying on the good-will and donated time of its community to review plugins. The onus of fixing this should be on the company behind the game, not players. submitted by /u/Seller-Ree
