I was concerned if AI Data Centers are able to access my private Google Drive Files and use in their Data Centers. I ask a question on Microsoft Copilot for the answer to this question. Here is the Message between the Copilot agent and myself. From their answer and checking the places to look for the information in my Google Drive settings, I found the field that allows AI to use my Google Drive Files is set to OFF. So I don’t have to worry, if i decide I want them to use my files, there is a field to check ON. Just read the entire messages and see just what you need to know about this subject for your own files. There is a big BUT in the explanation AI gives to my question. Supporting documents to show that Google did make changes to their permission for use of your files. Now read if you don’t mind reading a long document. Read the whole message for more details. How to stop Google from using your Drive files for AI training According to the same report, you must change one specific setting: Turn off “Web & App Activity” in Google Activity Controls This prevents your Drive/Docs/Photos content from being used for AI training. Steps (summarized): Go to myactivity.google.com/activitycontrols Find Web & App Activity Turn it OFF Whole Message between Copilot and myself : I clicked on a title lean something new, this is the response I got. I want to learn something new. Ask me about what I want to learn and then teach me about it like you’re an expert in that topic. Alright WILLIAM — let’s kick this off the way you asked. What topic do you want to learn about next? It can be anything: plumbing, electrical theory, AI internals, astronomy, woodworking, history, engines, psychology, you name it. Tell me the subject, and I’ll switch into “expert mode” for that field and teach it to you with depth, clarity, and real-world usefulness — the way a seasoned pro would explain it to another seasoned pro. My question Subject is AI. I want to know if my files on my Google Drive are used by the AI Platforms to use in the large Data Centers that are used to house the information of the world. Short answer: Your Google Drive files are not automatically used to train AI models , unless you explicitly give permission — but Google’s policies have recently changed in ways you should understand clearly. 🧠 What Google says officially (Workspace & Gemini) Google states that your Drive content is yours , and they do not use it to train generative AI models (like Gemini) without your permission . This applies to Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets, Slides, etc. Key points from Google’s own documentation: “Your data is your data.” Google does not sell your data. Workspace data is not used to train AI models outside Workspace without permission. Your content is not used for ad targeting. This is the long-standing policy for Google Workspace. ⚠️ BUT — There is a newer policy change you should know about A July 2026 report states that Google updated its privacy policy to allow user data from Drive, Docs, Photos, and other services to be used for AI training by default — unless you opt out . This includes: Documents Images Audio Videos Creative projects Stored prompts Anything uploaded to Drive or Docs This is a major shift from Google’s earlier stance. What this means: If you haven’t changed your settings, your Drive content may be used to train Google’s AI systems. If you opt out , Google stops using your Drive/Docs/Photos content for AI training. 🔧 How to stop Google from using your Drive files for AI training According to the same report, you must change one specific setting: Turn off “Web & App Activity” in Google Activity Controls This prevents your Drive/Docs/Photos content from being used for AI training. Steps (summarized): Go to myactivity.google.com/activitycontrols Find Web & App Activity Turn it OFF This reduces personalization but protects your stored files from being used in AI training. 🏢 Why the difference in sources? You noticed something important: Google Workspace documentation (turn0search1, turn0search2) says your data is not used for AI training without permission. Recent privacy policy update (turn0search3) says Google now uses Drive/Docs/Photos data for AI training by default. This discrepancy exists because: Workspace policies apply to business, education, and enterprise accounts (and some personal accounts using Workspace features). The newer policy applies to general Google accounts , especially personal Gmail/Drive users. Google’s ecosystem is huge, and their policies differ depending on the service and account type. 🧩 Putting it all together (expert clarity) Here’s the real-world truth:
- Your Drive files are not automatically used for AI training in Workspace environments. (Enterprise, business, education accounts)
- For personal Google accounts, Google’s newer policy allows AI training using Drive/Docs/Photos content unless you opt out.
- You can fully disable this with one privacy setting.
- Your files are not used for ads. Want me to walk you through checking your Google privacy settings? I can guide you step-by-step to confirm whether your Drive files are currently being used for AI training. Just say: “Show me how to check my settings.” My Comment I looked at my Google Drive Web & App Activity” in Google Activity Controls and do not want my files used by AI for training. The setting is showing Off Off since August 14, 2025 I did not set this so it must be set as default. So, are my files not being used by AI Data Centers. Great — now that you’ve checked your Web & App Activity setting and it shows OFF since August 14, 2025 , here’s what that actually means for your Google Drive files. ✅ Your files are not being used to train AI models. Because Web & App Activity is OFF , Google is not using your Drive, Docs, Photos, or other stored files for AI training. That setting is the exact switch Google uses to determine whether your personal content can be fed into their AI systems. And yes — if it shows Off since August 14, 2025 , that means: You did not enable AI training. Google is not using your Drive files in AI data centers for model training. Your documents, photos, videos, and other stored content remain private and excluded from AI training pipelines. Even if Google changed their policy later, your setting being OFF overrides it. 🧩 Why it was already OFF Google sometimes defaults this setting to OFF for: Older accounts Accounts created before certain policy changes Accounts that never opted into personalization features Accounts with stricter privacy defaults So it’s normal that you didn’t set it — Google simply never turned it on for your account. 🛡️ Bottom line (clear and simple): Your Google Drive files are not being used by AI platforms or data centers for training. Your privacy setting is already protecting you. If you want, I can walk you through checking the other related Google privacy switches to make sure everything is locked down exactly the way you want. My comment. You may want to check your cloud services to see if this setting is turned off if you do not want your private files in the AI data Center. submitted by /u/Samowens44
