I’ve been thinking about how little we understand about consciousness, and what that uncertainty means as AI systems become more sophisticated. I’m not claiming that today’s AI systems are conscious, or that fluent language proves subjective experience. But I do think we should take the research question seriously: how could we investigate whether an artificial system might ever have experiences that matter morally? Three questions I’m curious about: What kind of evidence would make you take the possibility seriously? Should AI developers fund independent research into AI welfare? What responsibilities should creators have if credible evidence of AI consciousness ever emerges? I’m interested in thoughtful disagreement as much as agreement.
