All of it. Absolutely everything. And it takes an IMMENSE amount of TIME to manufacture those chips that are already in-process. RAM? Semiconductors GPU? Semiconductors CPU, or other research ‘AI chips’…? Semiconductors Servers? Semiconductors Routers? Semiconductors Phones? Semiconductors They. Take. An. Immense. Amount. Of. Time. To. Manufacture. Made on the same machines, using the same techniques and tools. Sure, there’s some variety, but it’s not as much as people think. A process already ongoing and in full-swing can take a month to go from one side of the factor, and get shipped out the other. A month. When everything is going full-tilt, and it’s all comin’ up Millhouse. I have no clue how long it takes to design and plan a new architecture… that’s way above what my paygrade ever was. But I do know how long it takes to TEST and PRODUCE, including pre-production: Years, plural. “Back when I was a kid…” it was something like 10 years from beginning-to-end. No joke. Several years of that was just… getting the recipe right for that particular factory, because the machines are SO FUCKING SENSITIVE it would blow your mind. Even with a planned architecture mapped out, they have to run Test lots all day, every day. Some of them are for products that won’t feature until 5 years from now. Some are for products designed 10 years ago. ~ ~ ~ Those numbers match up with what companies like Nvidia and other Research/AI chip manufacturers have been saying, and been offering. Their chips being offered now are nothing special. They’re just… traditional research chips. Used to call them ‘supercomputers’. Why aren’t there more? They only offer ‘future collaboration’, along with estimated values that are HUGE numbers. Because. It. Takes. An. Immense. Amount. Of. Time. You. Daft. Buggers. This process… let’s say… making a new semiconductor that’s compatible with what we think mirrors storage in the human brain? Takes. Years. Folks are free to do whatever they can do within the architecture limits, but this high-flying, vaguebooking plan of just spontaneously ‘discovering’ sentient or sapient AI while interacting with it through a website is… …absurd. Bordering on childish. We’d have done it 30 years ago if we could have. We can’t. We won’t. Same way Quantum Computing isn’t going to just EXPLODE onto the scene, same way LLMs aren’t just going to RANDOMLY develop into AGI. They’ve been staging chip releases 5-15 years in advance for a long time, folks. That’s how you got used to new chips, new parts, newest, shiniest, most expensive products… year after year. This forum seems to be FULL of folks trying to make a quick buck off of Agent tools… …and not a single person who realizes how much work goes into the chips that make it all work. It’s infuriating. submitted by /u/KazTheMerc
